The rays of the sun cut their way through the clouds as the Great Furnace began it’s rise over the horizon and crested the mountain ranges. As the day broke birds of all kinds where taking wing, critters of all kinds emerged from their hidden holes and great beast of prey began their hunts even as the creatures of the night scurried away into their dens. The haunting sounds of the night slowly gave way to the chorus of the day.
In one particular tree a stream of sunlight cut through the foliage to land on the face of a teenage boy who had spent the night nestled among the branches. While it was far from comfortable, or warm, it was something the boy had been growing used to. Ever since leaving the little home he’d always known he hadn’t felt comfortable returning, not just yet. Maybe some time soon? He’d need to really fix it up though, and prepare to modify and renovate to fit that gravity training room Opherla had been telling him about.
But he also had alternative options for where to put the gravity room. With the spectre of the looming thread Callion warned of hanging over all of Earth the alternatives where looking like far more viable options. Both would require aid to collect, however, but he was already aware that Opherla had a space pod, hopefully he could get her to give him a lift when the time came. It was just a matter of which to utilise first?
A matter for another time.
As the light fell over the boy’s eyes it lured him away back out of his slumber and into the land of the living once more. One might have expected the boy to grumble and try to roll over, trying to light out of his eyes, only to fall from the branch he was laying on in some comical way. However this was not the first time the teen had spent the night in a tree. Fairly regularly his grandmother would take him out into the woods to sleep in unusual places, her reasoning being that during a crisis you never know where you may have to sleep.
The worst night of sleep during such training was the time she took him to sleep in a cave. On the ceiling. That wasn’t a joke, she made him spend the night training him to fly in his sleep to stick to the ceiling. Her logic? If someone is trying to track you down in a cave, the last place they’ll look is on the ceiling.
As such when he awoke he did not roll away, he simply lifted at arm to block the light as his eyes opened. Which was another thing his grandmother’s training had instilled in the boy; the ability to wake up very quickly. There was no flutter of eyelids and his mind slowly started working again, just a moment passing and his entire body was fully awake and ready for the day.
The boy unfolded his legs and let them fall to either side of the branch, bringing his body back into the upright position. Stretching out his limbs while maintaining his balance the boy vocalised a drawn out yawn crossed with a groan as he worked out the discomfort from sleeping in such an unorthodox place. He let his limbs flop down and dangle for a bit before reaching for a pouch he’d stuffed into a hole in the tree. There his hands found the food he’d set aside for breakfast, some wild fruits and dried meat.
Normally he’d do a morning workout before eating, but today was a little different.
After finishing his meal he took to the skies and started flying south. He had found a map while browsing through a random convenience store in East City, at least until he’d been shooed out by the owner who seemed to have a grudge against Saiyans. While being shooed out he hadn’t managed to return the map to it’s shelf and the owner had been very clear about his not being allowed to go back in… so Liek guessed that made the map his now?
As he flew he double checked the map to ensure he was headed in the right direction to reach his destination. Now, where might that destination be one might ask? A small island north of Papaya Island.
Just like that guy, Callion, had told him...
An hour or three later the boy spotted what he had to guess was the right island. It was north of Papaya Island and had a small pink house on it with the words ‘Kame House’ painted on it. A bead of sweat made it’s way down the back of the boy’s head at the sight of the… questionable choice of colouring.
Folding the map up the youth took a deep breath and steeled his courage. It was time to meet the man who would hopefully be his new teacher for the foreseeable future.
Taking a deep breath the boy landed in front of the tiny home, stepped up to the door, wiped his feet on the welcome mat, and politely knocked on the door. After a few agonising moments the door swung open and a hunched over, spindly old man with a bald head and a magnificent beard appeared. The mans eyes, hidden behind a pair of sunglasses, looked the young man up and tone, lingering a moment on the boy’s tail, before looking back up to his face.
With a voice scratched with age the old man spoke, “Well now. What brings you to my door young Saiyan?” The man was curious, not just about this boy as an individual, but about why so many Saiyans had been showing up on his doorstep lately.
...Shame it wasn’t a young lady though…
The boy bowed politely and replied, “I’m here looking for Master Roshi. I was told he lived here.” He took a breath to work through his nerves before continuing, “Callion said I should look for him and receive training.”
The old man’s eyes widened, he had, after all, heard the Saiyan’s warning as clearly as anyone else, “Callion, you say?” He pondered, “Did you tell you to seek me before, or after that telepathic message?”
“Before.” the boy replied honestly, “But… I was dealing with some things at the time… I didn’t think I could focus on training with a Master at that time.”
“I see.” The old man nodded. After a moment he sighed, “Callion was a good student, and if he vouches for you it means something. Even so, I want to know for myself. If I where to train you, how would you use your power?”
The man’s words confirmed Liek;s suspicion that the elder was the Roshi he’d been seeking. Standing up straight he began his reply, “I want to help people. If people need saving, then as someone with strength it is my duty to come to their aid. I don’t care about glory or fame. There is fulfilment in the act of helping people alone… that’s enough for me.” He smiled for a moment before frowning again and placing a hand on his chest, “Plus… there is one person in particular who is especially precious to me. I need to catch up to her. To keep her safe and protect her…” he blushed furiously and clammed up.
The old man was silent for a long moment before stroking his beard, “I see. You must care deeply for this girl…”
“Yes…” Liek admitted softly, “I… I think I love her.” He bit his lip and with a little more confidence blurted, “I-I’m in love with Opherla!”
Master Roshi’s brain record scratched. “YOU KNOW OPHERLA TOO?!”
