“Well, it’s finally time!” Babadi announced, the pitch of his already hoarse voice rising slightly as if he were trying to hide the edge of excitement within it… and not doing a particularly good job. “This is what you wanted, isn’t it…? The secret to my ability to control lesser beings…?” He had led Liari into the central chamber where the massive seal-ball had rested, its large, bulging vein-like protrusions pulsating as if…. It might’ve been alive.
…Odd… Might this have had something to do with the energy she had retrieved for Babadi…? Was he making ANOTHER servant for himself…?
Hm…
“Yes… Master.” Liari nodded, her eyes narrowing slightly at that last word, a somewhat displeased frown arching across her face. The wizard didn’t seem to notice though as, while his eyes seemed to be fixed on her, they weren’t exactly paying attention to the finer intricacies of her face… Only what that of the whole might’ve been capable of… The potato-headed wizard SMILED a genuine, almost creepily happy smile, him FLICKING his finger in gesture! The back room would open and that… hero-captain guy Liari had gotten for him in her excursion to the top level of the ship floated out as if held in some invisible, telekinetic hand, his body limp but constricted, clenched but not under his own power! The wizard was bringing him here… and Liari could already guess what his purpose was!
“…Indeed.” Babadi snickered, drawing the defeated her to them, him now floating beside him! “…This will be our plaything until I am satisfied you’ve learned all I am willing to teach!”
Liari narrowed her eyes first at the wizard… then at the hero, his helmet long since been removed by her so-called “master.” He wasn’t in the best shape, if his expression was any indication, his face scrunched up with eyes BARELY open in an agonized, yet defiant glare. Blood ran down from his face in multiple places from when Liari had crushed his helmet against his head, them dried into blackened, crusty lines across his pale, chiseled features. Fresh red streaks, though, ran down from the corners of his eyes as if he had been crying the stuff, some from his ears too, though they had been blackened just the same as the wounds Liari had inflicted. His costume, once elegant and clearly well-taken-care-of, appeared ragged and wrinkled, torn in a half-dozen places as if he had been wearing it for days… which he most likely had been. In essence, he looked like he should have after Liari condemned him to his fate: a prisoner of war and what would amount to a dead frog on a platter for dissection purposes. …Only difference was that this one was alive… and aware of his surroundings.
“I hope you don’t mind, but I spent some time with him myself.” Babadi cackled, lightly running his wrinkled, bony hands along the noble hero’s face, scraping away some of the dried blood and smearing some of the fresher variety. “…He was a tough nut to crack… but then, most ‘goody-goodies’ are. Once you peer inside, you’ll see just what kind of darkness he possesses.”
“V-villains…” The man choked in defiance, Babadi turning his way with an annoyed sneer on his face! “You… shall NEVER… turn me… I…”
“Blah-blah, savior-of-the-world, blah-blah.” Babadi mocked callously… as Liari looked on. She… had no grudge with this one… For all intents and purposes, he SEEMED like a good guy, if a little goofy! She could feel it in his energy, that little pit of darkness, a small fraction of his soul, a MINOR hold on what might be considered his faults… all surrounded by goodness. This man… was a man, if a good one… and she was going to be made to bury all of that.
…But it was necessary. For her revenge… To make her point… to DRILL IT INTO THESE PEOPLE’S HEADS WHAT SHE HAD TO SAY! The pity she had for the man bled away in the face of her larger goal… what was it… “the greater good…?” She was sure Babadi might vomit at such a phrase… but what did it matter? She knew what she was doing… and she was only A FEW STEPS AWAY! She wasn’t going to falter now, not when her dream was SO CLOSE to coming true…
“Now… You already have a basic grasp of magic in the form of transmutation so this shouldn’t be especially difficult for you. Focus your magics into a point… FEEL that dark core within his very being!”
Liari looked back in the wizard’s direction… before looking back at the man and closing her eyes… slowly taking a DEEP BREATH IN… then out, reaching out with her senses and dipping inside of the man’s mind… There was so much in him that was admirable and good… memories of a… a family, two daughters and… a wife. Memories of the people he saved on the job, how their gratitude and their safety gave him the greatest satisfaction…
“Revolting, isn’t it…?” Babadi snickered from behind the majin. “…But look deeper… move into his past… You’ll find it…”
And Liari would do so. Like a deep-diver, she braced herself before delving into the more concealed recesses of his mind… She saw… a mercenary, what might have been this man many years ago, taking a hard job to assassinate… someone… an official, from what his memories told her… Corrupt, evil, having already guaranteed the death of a hundred thousand in his cities with starvation just to fill his own pockets. She could feel his disgust for the man, how he was eager to make him disappear… but at the same time, there was some reluctance, some pulling at the back of his mind…
“Go deeper…” Babadi urged, shooing Liari along with a wave of his hand! “You’re almost there! That’s where the REAL darkness is…”
“No… Don’t… I’m not that man… anymore…”
“QUIET!” Babadi SNAPPED, the main RECOILING as Babadi SHOT an invisible pulse of DARK energy through him! “I’ve seen your mind and I know EXACTLY what you’re hiding in there!”
“…Then let me see…” Liari whispered, going to the very deepest point in the man’s mind… So this was what the wizard was talking about… Liari saw an even younger (perhaps in his 20’s) hero-captain standing with a crew of dark and EVIL figures, a blaster in one hand, a sword in his left. Images of destruction, of slaying, of PAIN flashed across Liari’s vision a million miles a minute, it all rushing by so fast, it nearly made Liari’s own head spin!
“I see…” Liari whispered before Babadi could interrupt… “I can see his past…”
“No…” The hero groaned, thrashing in his invisible restraints! “You can’t…”
“Good, Liari… Good… Now grab HOLD of his darkness and MAKE IT YOURS! PLACE IT UNDER YOUR CONTROL! RANGLE IT LIKE THESE HUMANS MIGHT ONE OF THEIR STUPID BEASTS!” Babadi cackled clapping his hands eagerly! “…Make him yours… and speak the magic words I’ve taught you. You know what they are!” Liari locked eyes with the man, his turning from defiant… to desperate, almost pleading… Liari only stared back blankly as her lips moved to mouth the phrase:
“Paparapapa.”
“GAAAAAAAUUUUUUUGH!” He SCREAMED, his body starting to SWELL and TWIST, a black ‘M’ SINGING itself across his forehead! His Muscles BULKED, veins arching and BULGING along his face and neck, his eyes SINKING into his head until they were enveloped in blackened circles! …And his power… Drawn out by the magic spell, Liari felt a power as SWOLLEN and DARK as the man himself now was, his body BRIMMING with power as if it had just been implanted under the skin! …And the smile that now etched across his face… Loyal, but sinister… Eager to please, whatever it took.
“Ah… Not a half-bad job…” Babadi remarked, cupping his chin… “…But this minion is weak… He would do little to serve our cause on his own. Kill him.”
“…How…?”
“W…What!?” The captain GROWLED, SQUIRMING in Babadi’s telekinetic grip! Despite his great and EVIL power now, he still wasn’t NEARLY strong enough to escape from the wizard’s magic.
“Do you feel that connection inside of you…? That… mental link…” Babadi tapped his swollen head with his finger. “…overload it with magic… and this man will POP! Just like a balloon!”
“NO!” He CRIED, almost begging again!
Liari stared at the man silently… before her eyes suddenly WIDENED, the man’s body beginning to BULDGE AND CONTORT MORE BEFORE-
POP!
Liari blinked as the man very much BURST like a water-balloon, a quick barrier erected over them both by Babadi deflecting the spray and containing it only to a small area.
“…You have done well… I do believe you are ready now.”
“Yeah.” Liari said harshly, her own mark BURNING AWAY instantly, her form slimming back down to its natural shape. “To leave.”
“What in the… WHAT DID YOU SAY!?” Babadi demanded!
“You have nothing more to teach me. I did all of this… PRETENDED to be your slave… just for this.” Liari explained… before throwing a light KICK in the wizard’s direction, KNOCKING him back and sending him CRASHING against his precious seal-ball!
“GAUUGH!” He screeched weekly, cradling his head! “But… BUT I MADE YOU!”
“Wrong. You trained me… and only after doing useless garbage for you. If you think I’m loyal to some two-bit hack like you…” Liari spit. “…Get real.” …And with that, she left. More than once she felt Babadi try to GRAB HOLD OF HER MIND, to ATTACK HER MENTALLY, TO SOMEHOW MAKE HER PAY FOR HER ARROGANCE… But he would get nothing. She would merely SLAP away his magical attempts as she flew up… and exited his ship
“…Once I’m done with them… It’ll be your turn.” She muttered, looking back down towards the ship once more… before FLYING OFF.
