A Saiyan was born on the planet twenty-five years ago under loving parents who sought to find a new life among a more peaceful species. However, it is said that you can take the child out of Vegeta, but you cannot take Vegeta out of the child. Kombu had trained under the tutelage of his parents since the age of three. He was strong; that was clear. Stronger than the average person on Earth.
But not stronger than the average Saiyan.
Kombu, like his parents, always held the worry in the back of their minds that one day the Saiyans of Planet Vegeta could come to Earth and threaten their very way of life. Kombu, in particular, wished to obtain more power not just to protect his home but to travel the universe someday and protect others.
Kombu awoke to the warm, gentle brush of sunlight that peered through his bedroom window. Happy warbles and chirps reached his ears as sleep's embrace pulled away. The Saiyan sat up, slowly, before reaching out with his arms to stretch the muscles of his arms and torso. Then came a heavenly aroma from the kitchen which caused the corners of his lips to grow wet with drool.
The Saiyan spat out the water mixed with toothpaste from his mouth into the porcelain sink before splashing his face with the cool running water. Kombu then glanced up toward the mirror. Staring back at himself brought a light glow to his cheeks. Now, dressed and refreshed, he hurried into the kitchen to see just what his parents had in store for his ravenous appetite.
Leak and Verna both greeted their son with happy grins when he arrived. Kombu grinned back before he spotted the smorgasbord of delectable delicacies! First, there were stacks of chocolate chip pancakes topped with butter and maple syrup. Mounds of golden hashbrowns and corned beef hash. A large bowl of golden-brown rice mixed with chopped leek, scrambled eggs and pork. And, finally, a dish with fruits of all kinds, including bananas, grapes, and jackfruit!
"Good morning, Kombu," Verna greeted. "Did you sleep alright?"
Kombu nodded while he sat and started picking and seizing at the assemblage of foodstuffs. "Yeah, mom," he answered, "I did. You two?"
"We did," Leak replied, locking his fingers together as he did. "Today's the day you go to find that old Martial Artist, right? What was his name again?"
"Master Yoshi?" Verna guessed, looking between her husband and son.
"Roshi," Kombu replied after swallowing his mouthful of pancakes. He was a Saiyan, but not a savage. "Master Roshi. He's said to be one of the strongest fighters on the planet!" not a millisecond passed before the man began to stuff his face again. His parents followed suit for a moment before attempting to talk again.
"Is he, now?" Leak asked while cocking an eyebrow. "Then it's safe to say you'll only benefit by training under him. Maybe we'll stop by at some point, too!"
Naturally, it did not take long for the Saiyan family to finish all of their food and then some. Nary a scrap was left behind in the wake of their Saiyan hunger. Now finished, Kombu bade his farewell and headed out the door. He took to the skies and began his search of the rumored house in the middle of the seas.
The Earthborn Saiyan soared above the ocean as he kept a watchful eye on the glistening surface. He felt thankful to even know how to fly in the first place. Kombu could not begin to fathom how he would manage to reach the rumored Martial Arts Master otherwise. Perhaps by boat or even plane. But, he wondered, would either option even be fast enough for him?
It was in mid-thought when his eyes locked on a tiny island just below him. A single house with a red roof roosted in the middle of the landmass. Could this be the place, Kombu thought?
"Only one way to find out," he answered this curious mind.
The Saiyan dropped steadily from on high until making a gentle landing on the white sandy shore that rested before the house. Upon closer inspection, he saw it had "KAME HOUSE" written on its face.
"Turtle house?" Kombu mused.
"Hello there."
The sudden voice sent the Saiyan on high alert! He jumped, immediately putting up his fists in defense of a potential threat!
"Show yourself!" Kombu demanded!
"Down here," the voice said again, sounding calm and sincere.
Kombu blinked, and then looked down to his right to see a giant brown sea turtle. Both he and the turtle stared at each other for a few moments. Kombu was the first to break the silence.
"Hi," he said warily.
"Hello," the turtle replied. "What's your name?"
"Kombu?" the Saiyan replied, slightly lowering his fists.
"You don't sound so sure," the sea turtle responded with a cheeky grin. "But it's nice to meet you, Kombu. I'm Turtle."
Kombu blinked again, now relaxing. "Turtle?"
Turtle chuckled. "That's my name, don't wear it out!"
The relaxed aura of Turtle made it easier for Kombu to put his mind at ease. "Nice to meet you too, Turtle. I'm looking for Master Roshi. Might you know where he is?"
Turtle nodded. "Sure do. He's my best friend. Master Roshi's inside the house if you'd like to come inside and meet him."
"I'd like that very much, Turtle. Lead the way," Kombu replied as he gestured the way toward the domicile.
Turtle wasn't the fastest animal as he pulled his way over the sand, but Kombu was a patient man. He went with the sea turtle's pace, and eventually, the two entered the house.
"Master Roshi," Turtle called, "we have a visitor!"
The inside of the tiny house was absolutely delightful. A homey living room greeted the pair as they entered. In it were a single TV and a lounge area. An open concept kitchen resided to the side. It was from the kitchen where an older man shuffled into the living room to greet them. His most prominent features were his white beard and shiny head. Sunglasses covered his eyes despite being indoors.
"Hello, Turtle," he said with a nod as he held his wooden cane. "Who might your new friend be?" the man adjusted his sunglasses as if inspecting the Saiyan.
"His name is Kombu," Turtle replied.
Kombu bowed respectfully. "Master Roshi. It's an honor to meet you. I've traveled far with the intention to train under you as your student."
The Martial Arts Master idly stroked his beard. "Young man, I'm flattered that you traveled so far. Alas, I don't just train everyone who comes to my doorstep. You have to prove to me that you have what it takes." his eyes seemed to have a lecherous gleam behind them, despite being covered by the sunglasses. His cheeks reddened as well. "Unless, of course, you can get me a certain gift to help convince me?"
Kombu cocked an eyebrow at the man. "Which would be?"
Roshi's face broadened with a lustful grin. "You could always get me a porno mag!"
Shock and awe slapped Kombu silly. His mouth went agape, and his face turned a bright red. Of course, he was no stranger to such literature. But being asked so casually about the subject was embarrassing.
"Master Roshi!" he yelped. "Is it really appropriate to promise training for favors like that? Where's your sense of honor? Where's your pride as a Martial Artist?"
Master Roshi sighed. There was a hint of defeat in his breath. "I suppose you're right," he relented. "It just gets so lonely out on this island. And not many girls find me that attractive. Plus, I should have some incentive to train you, my boy." Roshi paused for a moment and stepped closer, looking over his potential student.
"Although you're a Saiyan, aren't you? Your tail and your armor make it pretty obvious. I know a lot of Saiyans have a habit of being some aggressive soldiers. So why should I train you?"
Kombu released a sigh, and he shifted onto his knees. "Master Roshi. I promise you that not all Saiyans are alike. Yes, I like to fight. Yes, I wish to become stronger. But I also aspire to protect people. I hope to protect my home from threats that may come from the far reaches of Space. And, someday, I desire to explore the universe and protect others outside of this world. So please. Teach me what you know. So that I can have the ability to defend life."
The old Turtle Hermit stared at the young Saiyan for what felt like an eternity. Finally, he spoke.
"Kombu, you have a good heart. I can't deny that. So I decided that I will train you after all. And I will even teach you some techniques along the way. The first you will learn is one of my own: the Kamehameha."
