Ranik had been exploring the city for a long and good while now, taking in the sights around her, taking in the views of the city, meeting some friendly people, eating some good food, there was so much to do in the city, so many people to go and meet that Ranik feared she may not have a chance to properly do everything she wanted to do before she was satisfied with her trip to the city! For now, she would just have to be content with doing as much as she could within the time frame she had planned out to do it.
As she walked along, she suddenly came across a group of construction workers who were working on a house for someone, but it seemed to be going very poorly, and the work environment seemed incredibly stressful, as they were trying to rush things to get something done but were constantly bumping into one another and dropping things, as the foreman seemed to be incredibly stressed himself as he yelled at the workers.
"You lousy boneheads! If y'all hadn't been partying all last week we would have been a lot better off but now, thanks to you, we only got TWO FREAKING DAYS to finish a WHOLE FREAKING HOUSE! And if you all keep messing up, we ain't EVER GONNA FINISH!" The foreman yelled as he growled, shaking his head as he took his helmet off, ruffling his hair in agitation.
"Excuse me!" Ranik would call out as the foreman turned to her, an almost incredulous look on his face.
"Can I help ya with somethin', lady? If not then scram 'cuz we got a lotta work to do over here." The foreman remarked in a cranky tone.
"I was just coming over to see if you guys need help. I-I can help you if you need it." Ranik stated to the foreman.
"You really think you can help out? With this!? Hahahahaha! Funniest crap I've ever heard! Seriously kid, scram, we can handle this." The foreman snarled.
"But I really wanna help. I'm a lot stronger and more useful than you think!" Ranik exclaimed.
"Oh yeah? Can ya lift that support beam?" The foreman asked, pointing to one of the supporting beams for the house. He did this jokingly, since no man could lift the support beam in question without a lot of help or machinery.
But Ranik would smile, crack her knuckles, go to the middle of the beam, and with a small "Hup!" she would lift the beam up over her shoulder, making all the workers' jaws drop from seeing it!
"Is that proof enough for you?" Ranik asked with a wink, sticking out her tongue.
"Well I'll be…. Alright, pup, you're hired! Let's get right to work, this project might be saved after all! …If there is a God… He is so good…" The foreman smiled with a thankful gaze to the sky.
Ranik would soon help the workers in the process of getting the building up. The foundation was already laid, it was just all the other parts that needed done, the walls, the roofing, all that sort of stuff. While Ranik knew absolutely nothing on how to build a house of her own, she did exactly as the foreman told her to do. Where to place supplies, where to help in construction, where to help out a worker, which some of those she recognized and leapt into action before she was even asked to.
By the end of the first of the last two days the workers had to complete their project, Ranik had helped them construct the baseline shape of the house, complete from top to bottom with groundwork for the walls, flooring, roof, ceilings, etcetera. Ranik was a bit tired from all the work she had to put in, but looking at the place, it looked like an actual home, minus the lights and appliances.
"You did a fine job today, kiddo. Come on back tomorrow, we're still gonna need your help to finish the work we gotta do, alright?" The foreman asked.
"You got it, sir!" Ranik smiled as she was excited to come back and help them finish tomorrow. Ranik felt a good feeling welling up inside of her from helping out these people. It made her feel warm and fuzzy on the inside, like she did an incredibly good deed. It was a feeling so good she cherished it happily!
As Ranik went on her way, however, she realized she had her own problem: She didn't have a place of her own to call home. This realization hit her as she watched so many other people go to their homes, go to their places to rest. Ranik didn't have one of those. Maybe she'd find one eventually… maybe. In any case, she decided to head to the nearby local park when evening came upon her and would rest underneath a tree, hoping to get plenty of sleep that night so she could get up fresh and early tomorrow to start the job again.
Next morning arrived sooner than Ranik expected, as the wolf girl stretched herself out as she yawned while doing so, twisting and turning a bit to get out the kinks in her back as she rubbed her eyes while getting up. She would then make her way back to the construction site, hoping that things were going much more smoothly than yesterday when she found the workers. The workers yesterday were all panicked and worried but it sounded like it was due to their own fault. Now that Ranik helped them get to the position they were at, it was time to see how they progressed.
Ranik would see that the house was nearly almost done! It looked like they were finishing up putting the interior walls and flooring in, as well as the material for the ceilings in place, all while getting the electrical finished up all at the same time. Ranik beamed widely as she approached the work site, seeing the workers work with renewed vigor, and not panicked like they had been before. As she walked in on the site, the foreman praised his men for jobs well done when he noticed Ranik coming up to them and decided to greet her.
"Hey hey hey! It's the woman of the hour! How ya doin today, girlie?" The foreman asked in a very chipper tone upon seeing the practical savior of their project.
"I'm doing well! Even better now that I see you guys are almost all the way finished! I guess you don't need my help anymore?" Ranik asked.
"I didn't say that, but we're almost to that point! Mind helping us finish things up? Shouldn't take us too long, thanks to your efforts yesterday!" The foreman smiled.
"Okay boss! Just tell me what to do!" Ranik beamed proudly upon hearing the foreman's words.
Ranik would be back into the swing of working, though today's tasks were meticulous and precise as compared to yesterday's grunt work. Ranik didn't mind that a single bit, as she worked with the men every step of the way to make sure the job was done and done right!
And soon enough, the house was fully completed, ready for furniture and other things to be moved right into it! Ranik smiled as she looked at the beautiful house, a two story masterpiece that she had helped to create!
"Thanks for all the help, girlie. Here. A fraction of our pay to you." The foreman smiled, handing over the payment of zeni to Ranik, along with something else, as Ranik tilted her head upon seeing it.
"A… scratch off card…?" Ranik asked, a bit puzzled by it.
"Added bonus. The boys and I don't ever get anything off of them, so maybe you'd have better luck, eh? They say the Grand Prize is a discount or somethin… nothin' beats cold hard zeni payouts to me." The foreman shrugged.
"Thanks a lot! And if you ever need help again and see me walking around, holler for me, okay?" Ranik asked.
"Bahahaha! You got it, kid! Have yourself a wonderful day, alright?" The foreman spoke with a hearty laugh as Ranik smiled back at him.
On her way out, Ranik looked at the scratch off and found a stray coin on the ground. They said they never had luck with these, did they? Well…
Maybe Ranik had a bit of luck herself.
