"We have managed to acquire the services of one Master Shen of the legendary Crane School. His services cost....quite a pretty penny. You will go to him Project A.B.A.S., and you will not return unless you are ordered to, or you learn everything he has to teach you."
Nine looked at ABAS severely, tapping a sheaf of papers on her desk to straighten them. The pair were in the woman's small but extremely well-organized office, with ABAS comically stuffed into an undersized desk chair. He had been called up here a few minutes ago for an update on the search for the master of the Crane School, and it seems that the Blacksite had finally been successful! As much as he was coming to loathe their iron-tight control over him, even he had to admit their sheer competence was admirable.
ABAS steepled his fingers, leaning forward in his chair. "If you don't mind me asking Madame Nine, what are the parameters of this mission? From what I've read on him, the Master of the Crane school is the patriarch of a legacy of assassins and other such agents. Of course, I have no problem with killing or lack thereof. As far as I am concerned, Master Shen's business is his own as long as he doesn't threaten humanity as a whole. But I am concerned how his....instructions might interact with my programming and failsafe." ABAS explained, his voice a calm monotone.
Nine frowned, putting her current sheaf of papers in a bin and picking out another stack from a seemingly endless pile. "That is not your concern Project. We are perfectly aware of Master Shen's little idiosyncrasies and have put measures in place to ensure you are not put in a conflicting position. Now go. Master Shen's techniques will be essential if you are to defend humanity from its coming threats. Dismissed."
ABAS slowly rose, making his way out the door and towards the hangar of the facility. Once again, his concerns were dismissed and disregarded. It wasn't as if anything had changed: he had experienced this his entire life, and had patiently endured it. Now though, with what he had learned from Liari and others, the yokes on his freedom were beginning to chafe...
ABAS's flame-like aura faded as he dropped from the sky. The bio-android landed perfectly on the Crane Dojo's doorstep, barely even making a sound as he settled once more to the Earth. Unlike the cool, sharp lines of a Blacksite base, the Dojo of the Crane was a run-down, dilapidated thing. While it wasn't in complete disrepair, the peeling paint and dirty-scratched woof clearly told the story of a building that had seen better days. Despite some sudden misgivings, ABAS strode to the door and knocked.
The wooden door squealed open, revealing the face of a short, dark-haired kid dressed in the eye-searing yellows, greens and reds of the Crane gi. What caught ABAS's full attention, however, was the prominent black eyes and various cuts and contusions covering his face. This young human had clearly been through hell, and recently at that.
"Y-yes? What business do you have here! If you have nothing to say leave before you get hurt!" The young main squeaked, the threat undercut by the very real fear in his voice as he looked up at the massive bio-android. ABAS cocked his head, "I am ABAS. I have an appointment with your Master to start training under his guidance. I believe he should have been notified of my arrival 15 minutes and 13 seconds ago." ABAS said, clicking his beak in confusion. He didn't expect Master Shen to bow and scrape to train him, but he would have thought the man himself would at least want to meet a new student! The boy swallowed, "Oh, so you're THAT ABAS. You might as well come in then, the Master is finishing a training session with his students. I'm Masar by the way." With that, the boy swung the door wide open, allowing ABAS inside.
The inside of the dojo was as worn down as the exterior was. The unpleasant smell of sweat and blood intermingled with the musk of various candles that desperately attempted to beat back the darkness choking the long, warren-like hallways. Masar lead ABAS confidently through the maze, deftly maneuvering around corners and obstructions with the ease of long practice. They eventually came out in a long, tall room near the center of the building.
"NOT LIKE THAT YOU WORTHLESS INGRATES. STRIKE TO KILL!" At the front of the room, an old human was almost hopping up and down with rage, pointing at a pair of his students who had frozen in fear. "Do you think the Crane School is some kind of joke? Some kind of daycare where I teach you all to spell and play patty-cake! This is a school for assassins! For killers! If I see ANY of you EVER spar with nothing less than the intent to kill your foe, you will be punished!" Shen roared, pointing a finger forward. ABAS watched in interest as the marital arts master fired multiple thin beams of yellow ki at the students, piercing their legs and arms and causing them to scream in pain. Intriguing. This technique sacrifices destructive capability in favor of pure speed and piercing power. It would be a worthy addition to my repertoire. ABAS thought, eyeing Shen's smoking finger. It looked like this training would be worth the effort after all!
Shen scoffed waving a hand dismissively, "Remove them from my sight. I have more important matters to deal with than their complaining!" He said cruelly. He turned away as several boys like Masar darted in from the sides of the room to carry the unfortunate students away. ABAS stared down Shen, his eyes boring into the dark lenses of the man's sunglasses. Shen said nothing for several seconds, before making a quick hand gesture.
"Leave us."
The room emptied near instantaneously, leaving ABAS and Shen alone. The man paced a circle around the bio-android, poking and prodding him with an outstretched finger. "Well you're an ugly one aren't you? Those government types did mention you were going to be some kind of alien mix, but I expected one of those Sayians or maybe one of the really lizard-looking types. I never thought I would impart my school to a cockroach. Then again, maybe that's a good thing. My school isn't something soft like Roshi's, where you learn useless techniques only meant to defend. You WILL learn to kill here. And you WILL learn to obey the orders of your superiors."
"Mr. Shen I must-"
White hot, excruciating pain lanced through ABAS's entire body! It felt like someone had ripped him open and touched every nerve and cell with a white-hot poker. He dropped to the ground with an inhuman scream from a throat that had no need for air, or vocal cords to strain. ABAS had felt pain, of course. The battles he had gone through to reach this point had made sure of that. But this pain was beyond anything he had even imagined. If he had been a normal sapient, his sanity would have likely slipped free right then and there!
After several minutes, the pain slowly receded and ABAS gradually stopped twitching. He shakily got to his feet, not quite trusting his legs to hold him. Master Shen watched him from behind those dark glasses, a sneer on his lips. The bio-android's eyes widened as he spotted a small remote dangling from his right index finger. They made him a Key-Holder?! ABAS was stunned at the audacity of the decision. If it worked, then he would be forced far past his limits, unable to disobey Shen's legendary cruelty. Like many times before, ABAS had to admit he admired the Blacksite for their cold, almost machine-like precision. That didn't, however, stop the burning rage that burned in his breast.
"ABAS. While in this dojo you are not to raise your ki above my own. Furthermore, you are not to use your ki without my say-so. Finally, you will call me MASTER Shen. Is that clear?"
"....Yes Master Shen." ABAS said slowly, reigning in his energy so that he dropped to half of Shen's output.
"Now you're going to listen to me you ingrate. I have lived longer than anyone you have ever met. I have watched the centuries tumble by and have seen powerful warriors rise and fall. This Age is perhaps the most powerful I have ever seen, yet powerful students have escaped me! Roshi has warriors practically prostrating themselves to him to join the Turtle School, yet I am treated like some sort of outcast! Like they are too good for the Crane School! I can't let this injustice continue." Master shen pointed a long bony finger at ABAS, "You, my ugly student, will change that. I will beat the Crane School into you until you can think of nothing else. You WILL learn everything I have to offer, even if I have to kill you to do it. Are we absolutely clear?"
ABAS nodded slowly, feeling (quite familiar now) frustration and hopelessness rise in his chest. Once again, he was nothing but a tool: a convenient device for humans to further their goals. In defiance of all rationality and logic, Master Shen seemed obsessed with torture and cruelty as training devices, and he had no doubt that he would come to experience both. However, maybe this particular example was something he could turn to his advantage with a little groveling....
ABAS dropped to one knee, bowing his head. "As you say Master Shen, so it will be. A point. I only meant to say earlier that I have no problems with killing or obeying you. As a Key-Holder, even though it may be temporary, your word is law. As long as you do not order me to slaughter large amounts of humans or violate any of my other failsafes, I can not disobey you any more than you can refuse to breathe or eat. I will do my absolute best to become the best student you have ever trained."
A slow, dark smile spread across Master Shen's face. Then, he simply laughed. Laughed until tears streamed down his face and his voice was reduced to a low cackle. "PERFECT! You ABAS, are what I have always desired! No will of your own! No morals to get in the way! A perfect vessel for my teachings that will never betray me! With you my new student, the Crane will rise once more!"
