The life of a saiyan youth wasn't an easy path, it was filled with challenges and hardship, victory and defeat, highs and lows. Though one part of the training had always stood out from the rest of their training and education, it was a challenge of the mind instead of the body. By the early teen years a saiyan had put their body through hell and back, they've been beaten and abused and were taught to rise above and keep pushing themselves to move forward and reach new heights and become the warrior that the saiyan army had needed them to be but the Oozaru training had tested them so very differently.
Learning to master the great ape or the oozaru form was mentally straining, it was all in the users head. It came down to pure will power, determination and mental strength to conquer that challenge. If one wasn't mentally strong enough, they'd never be able to control the primative mind and take control of their actions, they'd essentially be a slave to the might Oozaru transformation! They'd attack nearly anything that moved, they wouldn't be able to control their actions, they'd simply wreck havoc on anything or anyone in their immediate area.
It was at the age of fifteen when Athren was faced with overcoming this challenge, he needed to be able to control his true saiyan power if he was going to be of use to the Royal Saiyan army. In order to keep the Capital and the people safe this training had been done out in Oozaru wastelands, there had been nothing out there of significance and it allowed an Oozaru to run rampant all about while the individual attempted to gain control of the beast. Depending on the individual trying to learn how to control the mighty Oozaru it could take a day, a few weeks or even a month or two in order to master it. It all depended on the mental strength of the individual.
Athren was fifteen years old when he went through his trail and his mentor was right there to assist him in any way he could, though it was mostly through coaching and lessons before hand. The entire job for the mentor was to teach their student as much as they could in order to prepare them for what was to come, to educate them on how the transformation would feel and what kind of mental fight would be ahead of them. Along with that came a simple 'how to' guide in order to give the student the best possible chance at results. Given the importance of this training, one student would do it at a time to prevent them from harming each other while they tried to regain control.
While Athren's comrades and peers would end up taking their turn Athren had spent lots of time with his mentor, his mentor was an elderly saiyan with plenty of knowledge and experience given his life span. His age had begun to have a negative effect on his fighting abilities so he was much more useful teaching the newer generations of saiyan's how to harness their true saiyan abilities. His wisdom and experience would hopefully be passed through from generation to generation to ensure that the saiyan race always had the best, most highly trained warriors.
Athren would have been lying to himself if he were to claim that he wasn't nervous about it, he questioned whether or not he could actually manage to control the beast and even if he did manage it, what would happen if he took longer than the rest? What the hell would everybody think? He wanted to always be within the top of the leader board with his peers, he didn't like settling for anything less than the number one spot, he had put far too many expectations on himself and it didn't make it easier on him.
He couldn't settle for anything less than first place and though he believed it pushed him to be the best he could be, it was actually quite the opposite. It occasionally clouded his confidence and filled his mind with doubts, limiting his actual ability when it had come to performing the feats that he needed too, especially at the young age he was at. He wanted to be respected and highly sought out by his superiors, he wanted to be the one with the top pick on where he wanted to go and what unit he got and maybe with enough work, he'd end up being selected for the Elite Royal army. He simply just put too much pressure on himself in efforts to be the best.
With his turn being next he had added so much extra pressure into the mix that his nerves were at an all time high, questions had been going through his youthful mind on repeat, what if he couldn't do it? What if he wasn't strong enough mentally to contain the will of the beast? What if it were just too much for him? He couldn't handle being deemed a low class for his inability to maintain it, to control the power. It was just unacceptable to him, he needed to be the best on every level that he could. If he failed here, it would break him. He had demonstrated that when it came to strength and skill that he was among the top of his peers, the best of the best with the most potential for growth. He couldn't afford to take a hit here where a demonstration of mental strength mattered.
As the clock continued to tick and his turn was nearing in the next few days, he couldn't help but lose sleep wondering about it, stressing about it. Night sweats, nightmares, it all came into play. The once confident and even cocky saiyan was already being defeated by his own thoughts and his own emotions. The trail couldn't come soon enough, the suspense was killing him.

With a blutz ball high in the sky in the distance, Athren had found himself and his mentor Tora had been sitting upon one of the ridges the overlooked the Oozaru wastelands, both they're eye laid witness to a fellow saiyan teen stomping around in the distance attempted to gain control over the beast all while avoiding looking at the Blutz wave ball, he had been at it for what seemed like an eternity. The roars, the loud stomping footsteps echoed throughout the lands, it was actually quite a sight to see and Athren was pretty damn grateful that he was far off and over here. Even if the mighty form had one solid and easily exploitable weakness. At the age he was at, he had hoped he'd never end up facing off against a mighty Oozaru, their size and power was just overwhelming to one as young as him. Even if he had put his best into a strategy, the odds of winning were slim to none against an ape that had control.
Tora had observed Athren for a moment and could see the worry and the stress consume the young saiyan fighter, it was written all over his face and more so in the shining ocean blue eyes of the saiyan, even the boy's posture had stunk of nervousness. "You know what you need to do?" Tora questioned with a bright smile. "You need to take a deep breath and not worry so much about it, I have absolutely no doubts in my mind that you'll be able to control this form and use it to it's highest potential. The more you worry about it and the more you stress, the more you're going to find yourself vulnerable to the primitive and powerful influence of the transformation." Tora had given an Athren a light pat on the back.
Tora's teaching methods weren't in brutal training sessions or physical strain, this was a test of the mind and one's mind needed to be collected and calmed. The best way to approach this was words of wisdom and support, guidance and lessons to push one through to succeed, stressing and exerting their bodies did nothing to prepare them for this task.
Athren couldn't help but shift his head over to look at Tora, his shoulders shrugging lightly as he dangled his feet down off the ridge they sat upon. "I just can't get it out of my head, You've told me what to expect and told me everything I need to know, but until I'm actually there.." His eyes then shifted once again, this time to look at the Oozaru in the distance. "I don't really know how it's going to go, What if I just can't do it? What if I'm not mentally strong enough and the peak of my power is where I'm at now?" The doubts had been strong in the young boy, though Tora never would have understood where they had came from.
Tora snickered lightly, "You've really got to stop over thinking it, You're the strongest of your peers. You've displayed the talents and the smarts to pull of impressive feats for a saiyan of your age. You need to stop thinking about the what ifs and simply think of the end result you want, You'll complete this task, whether it takes you a day or a week is irrelevant." He smiled reassuringly, "If you fail your first day, I'll stop the blutz waves and we'll try again the day after, and the next if we have too. How long the journey takes you, it really doesn't matter so long as the end result is the one that you want."
Athren listened carefully as every single word said was absorbed into his head, Tora had a point. Athren was putting a lot of pressure on himself to get it done quickly and set a record and failing the entire thing was also bouncing around in his head but even if it did take him a few days or a few weeks, so long as he could control the power, he'd have won this whole thing and proved himself, right? "You're right. I know you're right but I just can't stop thinking about it."
Tora nodded and understood starting to tell a story of those he's witnessed fail. "You know some of the best saiyan warriors, even the royal family struggled to control the form? They were in a similar situation that you were in. Lost in their own heads and overthinking it all drastically. They didn't believe in themselves and that's where it all went wrong and for some it was quite the opposite." He paused as he rested a hand on Athren's shoulder. "Some of them went into it thinking they'd have it done in no time at all, they thought how hard could it be? They assumed their mind was as strong as their bodies and didn't prepare themselves appropriately and were simply overwhelmed by the mind of the beast. In fact, my father was one of those individuals, yet he was one of the most respected fighters on the planet." Tora glanced over at the might Oozaru, still stomping and crashing about. "Just go into it believing in yourself.. but you already have experience whether you think you do or not, that other form you've got, didn't you tell me it makes you more aggressive, more brutal and tends to take control of you sometimes? You managed to get that in check. Didn't you? All you've got to do is repeat that, all you've got to do is do that one more time and you're good. You've got this kid."
Athren listened closely again and nodded one more time. Tora absolutely had a point. He did do this before with his demonic form and that wasn't easy and he didn't say it aloud but hearing about the struggles of some of the most respected saiyans on the Planet? That helped ease the young boys mind as well. "Once again you've got a good point." Athren said as he felt his nerves finally calming down and his mind clearing and shifting over to more positive thoughts on it. He did have this, he wasn't going to fail, he'd own this transformation and make it his own.
Tora nodded. "You'll be fine, but why don't we call it a day and you can go get some rest. We'll come back here tomorrow and do some more mental preparations before your trial is here. I want you to be the most prepared student I've ever had for this. Alright?" Tora really did put his full faith in all of his students, Athren wasn't special in any means. He just wanted to see each and ever single student succeed. They were the future of the saiyan race. Whether they became famous warriors or not. They were going to shape the future.
"Sounds good to me." Athren stated before getting to his feet and flying off back to the base, his mind finally relaxed. Even though it had just been a pep talk, he felt more at ease and felt even more prepared for it than before and with his hopes up about tomorrow, he felt as if he'd learn even more to prepare himself for the challenge to come.

It was the day after the pep talk and both Athren and Tora had found themselves in the exact same location as the day previously though instead of them simply watching the mighty Oozaru and discussing Athren's questions and concerns on the form itself, today had taken a shift to focus on Athren's mental preparedness over his emotional conflict. This task would require his mental strength to be high and his emotions to be relaxed and calm. He couldn't be distracted by anything external or internal.
Today Tora was going to teach Athren a method to control his emotions and his thoughts, it was something that saiyan's didn't often do but was super beneficial to ones mental and physical health. He was going to teach Athren how to meditate. He never expected any of his students to use this exercise outside of right now but it was something that could be applied at any point in time or any point in life in general. "We're going to do a unique exercise today to calm your mind and even strengthen it. It's going to allow you to control your thoughts and relax your body and your mind, allowing you to think clearly and retain focus on the challenge that you'll be facing ahead."
Athren had listened intensively, nodding his head when his mentor had finished with his words. Though he wouldn't have had any sort of idea what was to come, he didn't know what the unique method was but he had complete faith in the direction he was being taken. "So what exactly is his method?" He asked, not knowing that what he was going to be told next was going to be something he had never tried and wouldn't really be into.
Tora chuckled faintly and began to explain. "Today, I'm going to teach you meditation." He left his explanation at that for now because the fact was, he knew how most saiyan's reacted to it. It wasn't fun or physical and it surely wasn't a challenge, most saw it as simply idling around and accomplishing nothing and to a degree they would be right for it wasn't much more than idling around physically but mentally and spiritually, it was perfect relaxation. It allowed one to clear their mind, their thoughts and their body.
Athren couldn't help but arch his right brow curiously, he had heard of meditation but he didn't think he'd ever be asked to do it, it wasn't common along the planet Vegeta at all. "Wait.. Isn't that what those Namekian's do? Where you just sit around and do nothing?" Athren's right hand came up and scratched his head as he questioned further. "I mean, I've never once even heard of a saiyan doing that, Are you sure it's even worth it?" Though Athren trusted his mentor, this was a moment where Athren's youth was playing a part against him because he thought he knew it all simply by following the saiyan standards.
Tora shrugged his shoulders with a large grin on his face. "That's very close to the answer I was expecting but you're going to have to trust me. Instead of putting your thoughts against what I'm telling you, just take a seat and cross your legs."
The young saiyan paused for a moment and gave Tora a look, he was rather hesitant to do it but Tora extended his hand and gestured towards the ground and it was at that point Athren decided to act. "Ah, what the hell.. Right? It isn't like anybody is out here to see this besides that giant ape." He retorted in a smart tone of voice as he took his seat on the ground and crossed his legs, his ocean blue eyes glaring up at his mentor. "Now what?" He scoffed, awaiting further instruction while thinking that this was all just a waste of time.
"Alright, Now I'm going to get you to close your eyes." Tora said calmly as he extended his right hand out and awaiting Athren to do as instructed. Once Athren did, Tora created a small, humming ball of Ki in his right hand. That was it's entire purpose, to hum rather quietly. Athren couldn't help but open his right eye and glare at the ball of Ki, curious as to what it's purpose was. Tora simply reassured the young saiyan. "Just relax and keep your eyes closed and trust me."
Athren had once again sealed his eyes shut. "Alright, Alright." He said before listening closely and carefully, awaiting further instruction from his mentor.
"What I need you to do is focus on the sound of the humming and the sound of my voice. My voice will guide you, the sound will cleanse you." At this point Tora slowly began to circle Athren, his footsteps very slow and steady as he was careful to not make any extra distracting noises. "I want you to breath in slowly and exhale slowly, in through the nose and out through the mouth, all while focusing on the humming."
Athren listened carefully, he focused on the humming of the Ki while he kept himself relaxed and calmed. The humming was a unique yet calming pitch that was rather keeping most of his attention. Though he still listened to instruction, he slowly breathed in through his nose and out through his mouth and awaited more.
As Tora continued to pace around took a small minute break from speaking before he continued in his gentle tone of voice, making sure to do his best to keep the young saiyan immersed in what he was doing. "I want you to start focusing on the form in your head, the form of the mighty Oozaru, while keeping your breathing slow, relaxed and focused."
The boy had continued to keep his breathing steady, in through the nose and out through the mouth. Slow, deep breathes continued while he changed his thoughts. He now had managed to clear his mind of everything but the humming sound and the sound of Tora's voice. His muscles had seem to relax too, they had almost felt as if they weren't even there. His vision of the Oozaru transformation came quickly, he pictured the roaring beast in all its ferocity, all it's power and everything it was capable of. He pictured it roaming around and destroying everything in it's path and in no way connected himself to the form. The vision was just of what he pictured that the form was to his own mind.
After a minute or two Tora had starting to speak again, laying down more instructions for the young saiyan to follow. "Now I want you to picture that Oozaru, that mighty great ape as you, in full control of the power, the might. I want you to picture it responding to your ever move, almost as if you were like you are now."
Once more Athren had followed instructions, he took a moment to allow himself to feel as if he was the beast, as if he were in control of the entire situation. He visualized the view and perspective of himself as the giant ape and how the landscape would look so small and puny compared to himself, he could almost feel the muscles and the incredible size of them. He could fully picture himself as the beasts as he began to stomp around as if he was walking normally. In his head, there had been no difference between his base form and that transformation. It had felt as natural as it was walking on his own two feet or firing a ki blast. It seemed easy.
A few hours of silence had gone by as Tora had long taken a seat and observed his student, letting him relax and explore with his mind, letting him set the tone for the next day, the day that would be the young saiyan's trial. Eventually, Athren had slowly opened his eyes to observe Tora looking right at him. "How'd it go?" the elder saiyan had asked.
Athren couldn't help but respond with a tone that would have sounded close to excitement. "I'm not going to lie to you, that was.. almost like an out of body experience, I felt like I was the Oozaru, I felt like I was in full control of it and myself and it didn't seem so bad."
Tora would have smiled as he pointed out towards the wastelands. "Good, I'm glad that's what became of your thoughts and your vision because tomorrow, you're up." The wastelands were empty and the mighty Oozaru was no longer there, it had appeared Athren's peer had completed the trail and took full control of the transformation. "You now know what to expect and set up the end result, you know how to get it done. All you've got to do is do it for real. All you've got to do is take full control of yourself, your future and your destiny." Tora had paused to turn his back to the younger saiyan. "Now, I want you to go back and get some rest. You're going to need it for tomorrow."
Athren would have initially disliked that his trail was tomorrow but he now felt more prepared than ever before, he was ready to do this. He nodded his head and smiled. "I'll see you tomorrow then." It was at this point he flew off towards the base to go get some rest. Tomorrow was the day he'd own this.

Today was the day of trail, the day the young saiyan boy would have one of his greatest challenges to overcome on the road to become a full fledged elite warrior, it was the day he'd learn to control the amazing great ape transformation. He would solidify himself as a worthy choice for the Royal Saiyan Elite, he'd show everybody that he wasn't just strong physically but mentally as well and more importantly, he'd prove to himself exactly what he was capable of if he put his mind to it.
Instead of being close to the wastelands from a safe spectating point, Athren had found himself in it this time with Tora hovering over him. Tora's right hand was out with a different looking technique held out in his hands. "Remember what you went through the last few days and remember what it was like to control the beast yesterday, You've got this kid. It's all on you. Don't fight against the mind of the ape. Embrace it, control it. It's you."
Athren nodded his head as he glared up at his mentor. "I've got this." He said in a tone of confidence, today he had felt like he got it, now that he was in the moment there wasn't a doubt in his mind and he wasn't nervous at all. It was just another challenge to complete, another hill to climb and another goal for him to reach.
Now Tora had acknowledge that his student was ready and prepared to the best of his ability, "Here it goes kid." Tora would throw his technique into the air and suddenly begin to fly away to spectate from afar. The technique would POP in the air and emit the same humming that came from his Ki technique the day prior. He sat along the ridge line where he had been training Athren the days leading up to this and spectated, silently cheering on the youngin.
Athren had taken one last deep breath before tilting his head back and gazing up at the Blutz wave technique and it was almost immediately after his eyes had made contact that he began to change. His muscles began to grow, his body getting larger and larger with every second. His outfit had grown along with him as fur began to form on his body, unlike most saiyan's, his fur was a dark grey that matched the color of his tail. His eyes turned to the color of red as his teeth grew into large fangs. The weight of his size increase sinking him into the ground. It wasn't before long that Athren had been fully transformed into the mighty Oozaru for the first time in his life.
"GRRRR!" Letting out a loud roar the giant ape had extended both of it's arms high into the sky before bringing them down to smash into the ground to shake the environment all around him, One, two, Three slams of his fists as the ape was in full control! It would have been one hell of a sight to see. The ape had now began to beat it's chest and letting out another loud roar as it exclaimed to the planet that it was present and powerful, showing to all that it was the alpha creature.
It stomped around violently before grabbing a large boulder from the ground and tossing it towards a rock formation, the boulder crashing into it and breaking apart before the ape approached and launched both of its arms against the stone, causing it to crash and crumble to the ground in pieces! The ape was causing as much mindless destruction as it could with no signs of restraint, it was completely out of control and ripping apart the landscape to it's own desires! Without much action going on around it or people, all it had was the environment around it! As it smashed and stomped it finally opened it's large jaws to unleash a massive mouth blast technique that it held for seconds to drag along the environment and cause even more damage to the wastelands!
Tora sat watching for hours as the ape went rampant, as it destroyed everything it could that had been in it's sight. "Come on kid, You can do this." He didn't have any single doubts about Athren being able to do it, Athren just had to focus.
Finally there was a revelation in the situation, like the day before Athren had initially began to focus on the humming sound emitted by the Blutz technique, focusing only on that sound as he tried to regain control of his body. The sound was calming and peaceful and he continued to let himself hear it, he began to visualize himself in full control. The perspective was the exact same as the one he pictured the day before and the sound was too, it was all right there. He just needed to reach for it, he just needed to grasp it!
He continued to focus on the sound and what he wanted the most in this moment and that was for him to be in control. The battle was all mentally at this point but the massive beast would finally come to a stop as the conflict between the minds had been present. Athren was right there, he was so close to taking over. The great ape would begin breathing slowly, in through the nose and out through the mouth and even it's eyes would close as it's head tilted down slightly. It was obvious that Athren had been taking it over.
The ape would be at a standstill for a matter of minutes with it's eyes closed and it's steady and slow breathing in effect. Athren continued to visualize himself in full control and with one more deep and focused breath, he opened his eyes. "I did it." Athren said in his deep tone, as he raised his hand to look at it. He looked around the environment just to soak in the shift in perspective. It was strange standing so tall but it was so fitting, the height had gone along with the power and he really couldn't even begin to believe how strong he felt with this form. Surely with this form he'd be able to take on anything.
Of course Tora had still been watching from afar, and he was proud of the young saiyan. He had used everything in his knowledge base to best prepare Athren to take on this challenge and he nailed it, he managed to control the form with little time. He was proud of himself, and Athren was rather proud of himself too and very impressed. Not only had he been impressed but he had learned a very powerful lesson today. If he wanted something bad enough he could do it, though sometimes it would take preparation ahead of time. With that, Tora would dismiss the blutz wave and flag his student over after Athren had regained his base form. It was time to congratulate the young saiyan and give him the rest of the day off. After all, the young one deserved it more now than ever.
